Twenty-Six Years in the Making: Steve Gaspa Releases Gritty, Heartfelt Novel Based on a Life of Baseball and Resilience

Author and Florida State University alumnus Steve Gaspa is proud to announce the publication of his debut novel, The Second Chance. More than just a sports drama, the book represents a twenty-six-year journey of persistence, mirroring the very themes of resilience and redemption found within its pages.

The "Good Will Hunting" Dream: From Screenplay to Novel. The origins of The Second Chance date back to 1999, when Gaspa first penned the story as a screenplay. At the time, Gaspa, a Theatre/Acting graduate from Florida State University, conceived the project as a vehicle for his own acting career. Much like Sylvester Stallone with Rocky or Matt Damon and Ben Affleck with Good Will Hunting, Gaspa wrote the lead role of Michael Stevens specifically for himself to play.

The transition from a hand-printed manuscript, meticulously typed by Kellie Harris (Gaspa), to a published novel was a long and winding road. Despite early encouragement from Hollywood legends like Alan Arkin, who read the screenplay overnight and praised its quality, Gaspa faced numerous personal and professional hurdles that prevented the film from being produced at that time. Now, over a quarter-century later, the story has finally found its voice as a gritty, emotionally resonant work of fiction.

A Narrative Forged in Personal Experience: The Second Chance is deeply rooted in Gaspa’s personal history, blending his dual passions for theatre and baseball. Gaspa’s authentic portrayal of the high-stakes world of professional sports is informed by his own experiences on the diamond, including a 1986 invitational tryout with the New York Mets organization. Though he was not signed or drafted into Major League Baseball, that moment of perceived failure became the seed for his creative success.

The character of Michael Stevens was first born in an "Acting for the Camera" class at FSU during a student film titled Through A Glass Darkly. Gaspa credits Professor Michael Richey for planting the idea that while his playing days might be over, he could still portray a ballplayer on screen, a suggestion that eventually led to the 1999 screenplay. The novel also pays tribute to Gaspa's father, George Patrick Gaspa Sr., who instilled a lifelong love of baseball in him from a young age, and his junior college coach, Fred Thatcher, who once called him the best line-drive hitter he had ever seen.

The Heart of the Story: A Father’s Dedication. While the novel features the "impossible" achievement of a 57-game hitting streak, its true weight comes from the raw, personal stakes regarding family and loss. The book is dedicated to the loving memory of Evan Christian Gaspa, the author’s son, who was born at just 23 weeks and 6 days of gestation on Father’s Day in 1999, and lived for only one hour.

This profound personal tragedy serves as the emotional anchor for the novel’s most harrowing chapters. In the story, the protagonist’s son, Michael Jr., is born prematurely at 22 weeks, forcing the character to confront his past, his ego, and his distance from faith. The "gritty" nature of the book stems from these real-life parallels, offering a transparent look at the fear and hope inherent in a neonatal intensive care unit.

A Message of Personal Renewal Through the lens of a record-breaking baseball career, The Second Chance explores the discipline and hard work required for spiritual and personal renewal. Gaspa uses the metaphor of the athlete, citing 1 Corinthians 9:24-27 to illustrate that self-control and persistence are necessary not just for a "perishable wreath" of sports records, but for the "imperishable" prize of a life lived with purpose and faith.

"This novel is loosely based on my life," Gaspa notes in the introduction. "I used some of my own personal experiences; some I had to exaggerate, while others I had to suppress". The result is a story that resonates with anyone who has ever felt like they were "just a shell" of who they once were and had to fight to find their way back.
